Classic Car Drivability Problems
Classic Car Drivability Problems Fixed in Maine
Hard cold starts, a rough idle, a car that will not restart hot, stalling, hesitation or a temperature gauge that keeps creeping up. Portland Performance diagnoses and fixes the drivability problems that keep classic cars and trucks parked instead of driven.
We work on American muscle cars, classic trucks, European classics and Japanese classics, at our shop at 1830 Lisbon St in Lewiston.

Drivability problems we fix
- Cold starts: long cranking, hard starting and poor running until warm
- Idle: rough, high, low or hunting idle
- Hot restart: cars that start fine cold but crank and crank after a stop
- Stalling and hesitation: stumbles off idle, bogging and stalling at stops
- Overheating: cooling system problems in traffic, on the highway or on warm days
- Fuel smell and running rich: flooding, fouled plugs and fuel odor
- Corrections: cars that never ran right after work somewhere else
Diagnosis over guesswork
Fuel, spark and cooling together
Most drivability problems come from how the fuel, ignition and cooling systems work together. Our calibration background means we look at the whole picture.
Carbureted or EFI
We work on carbureted and fuel injected classics alike, including carburetor and distributor work and Holley EFI tuning.
How a classic job works here
- Written assessment first. Before any work starts, we look the car over and give you a written mechanical assessment, so you know what it needs before you commit.
- Photos and your approval. You get progress photos as the work happens, and we check with you before going past the budget we agreed on.
- A progress log you can follow. We keep a running, blog style progress log on your car as each repair gets done, so you are in the loop the whole way. When the job is finished, print a copy to keep with the car's paperwork.
- A care plan and a follow up. When the car leaves, you get a maintenance plan covering fluids, cooling, fuel, brakes, tires and seasonal layup, and we follow up after your first few drives.
Questions we hear
My classic is hard to start when it is hot. Can you fix that?
Yes. We find out whether a hot restart problem is fuel, ignition or starting related and fix the cause.
Why does my classic overheat?
Overheating can come from the cooling system, ignition timing, fuel mixture or airflow. We test to find the real cause instead of guessing.
Which classics do you work on?
We work on American muscle cars, classic trucks, European classics and Japanese classics. If you are not sure whether your car is a fit, call or send us a message with photos.
Do you do paint or bodywork?
No. We do the mechanical side only, and we are glad to work alongside your paint and body shop. See classic car and truck service for everything we handle.
Where is my car kept while you work on it?
Indoors in our heated, monitored shop at 1830 Lisbon St in Lewiston, from drop off to pickup. Winter classic work comes with discounted storage while the vehicle is here, and major builds store free. See how we keep your classic safe.
