Classic Brakes, Suspension and Chassis
Classic Car Brakes, Suspension and Chassis Work in Maine
A classic should stop straight, steer true and ride the way it was meant to. Portland Performance repairs, rebuilds and upgrades brakes, suspension and steering on classic cars and trucks, so the car feels as good as it looks.
We work on American muscle cars, classic trucks, European classics and Japanese classics, at our shop at 1830 Lisbon St in Lewiston.

Chassis work we do on classics
- Brakes: repair, full brake system rebuilds and upgrades, including master cylinders, boosters, calipers, wheel cylinders, lines and hoses
- Suspension: repair, rebuilds and upgrades, including bushings, ball joints, springs and shocks
- Steering: wander, play and heavy steering diagnosed and repaired
- Driveline and rear ends: vibrations, noises and leaks tracked down and fixed. See engines, transmissions and drivelines
- Corrections: sorting out chassis work another builder left unfinished or got wrong
Built to drive, not just to sit
Whole system thinking
Brakes, suspension and steering work together. We look at how the car drives as a whole, so one fix does not uncover the next problem.
Matched to how you drive
A weekend cruiser and a car that sees hard driving need different setups. We talk through how you use the car before recommending upgrades.
How a classic job works here
- Written assessment first. Before any work starts, we look the car over and give you a written mechanical assessment, so you know what it needs before you commit.
- Photos and your approval. You get progress photos as the work happens, and we check with you before going past the budget we agreed on.
- A progress log you can follow. We keep a running, blog style progress log on your car as each repair gets done, so you are in the loop the whole way. When the job is finished, print a copy to keep with the car's paperwork.
- A care plan and a follow up. When the car leaves, you get a maintenance plan covering fluids, cooling, fuel, brakes, tires and seasonal layup, and we follow up after your first few drives.
Questions we hear
My classic pulls when I brake. What causes that?
A pull under braking can come from the brakes themselves, worn suspension parts or steering. We inspect the whole system to find the cause.
Do you do brake and suspension upgrades?
Yes. We repair, rebuild and upgrade brakes, suspension and steering on classic cars and trucks.
Which classics do you work on?
We work on American muscle cars, classic trucks, European classics and Japanese classics. If you are not sure whether your car is a fit, call or send us a message with photos.
Do you do paint or bodywork?
No. We do the mechanical side only, and we are glad to work alongside your paint and body shop. See classic car and truck service for everything we handle.
Where is my car kept while you work on it?
Indoors in our heated, monitored shop at 1830 Lisbon St in Lewiston, from drop off to pickup. Winter classic work comes with discounted storage while the vehicle is here, and major builds store free. See how we keep your classic safe.
